英國首相布朗才剛剛走馬上任，不過8日出版的前首相新聞秘書日記卻揭露布朗跟布萊爾
接班的秘辛，書中記載，布朗當年一度被關在廁所裡，幸好布萊爾救了他，為了報答布萊
爾的「救命之恩」，布朗才答應讓賢。

今年六月終於坐上首相的位子的布朗，要不是因為被關廁所，布朗當大位可能會提早個
13年？

話說1994年時，當時的工黨領袖史密斯剛過世，布朗跟布萊爾為了誰來繼任黨魁而僵持
不下，布朗後來跑去上廁所，很久都不見人影，直到他打電話求救，布萊爾才知道布朗不
知道怎麼搞的竟然被鎖在廁所裡了。布萊爾於是趁機要脅布朗，答應讓布萊爾接任黨魁，
否則就不救他。

這段搞笑卻又真實發生的插曲，讓這兩個人暫時拋下瑜亮情節，達成當年的接班共識。
因為對手被關廁所讓布萊爾順利更上一層樓，其實也因為廁所，讓布萊爾討到老婆。

布萊爾夫人雪莉透露，1979年當時兩人在義大利度假，就在她跪著清洗馬桶時，布萊爾
突然跟她求婚，那段求婚的畫面至今令她難忘，還說真是有夠浪漫。

布萊爾跟雪莉結縭至今27年，前前後後生了四個小孩，鶼鰈情深的模樣也在政壇傳為佳
話，兩樁人生大事都是在廁所搞定，只能說布萊爾跟廁所還真是有緣。

Blair 'rescued Brown from toilet'

Gordon Brown once locked himself into a toilet and had to be freed by
Tony Blair, according to ex-Downing Street press spokesman Alastair
Campbell's diaries.

Mr Brown and Mr Blair met at a friend's house in Edinburgh shortly after
the death of the Labour leader John Smith. They were discussing who
should replace him. The diaries, which refer to Mr Blair as TB and Mr
Brown as GB, say: "TB was clear he should stand because he felt that was
the best chance for the party, but GB was not convinced. At one point, GB
went to the toilet.

"Minutes passed and TB was sitting twiddling his thumbs and even
wondered if GB had done a runner. Eventually the phone went.
"TB left it, so then the answering machine kicked in and GB's disembodied
voice came on: 'Tony. It's Gordon. I'm locked in the toilet.'
"They both ended up laughing about it. TB went upstairs and said: 'You're
staying there until you agree.' "

The two men later made a deal at a London restaurant, Granita, where
Mr Brown agreed to step aside to give Mr Blair a clear run at the Labour
leadership.

It has been widely reported that in return he was given a promise that he
would be able to wield huge power as chancellor, and that Mr Blair would
step down and hand over power to him at some point in the future.

Mrs Blair told how Mr Blair had proposed to her while they were on holiday
in Tuscany in 1979, before he became an MP. "As we were leaving to go
home, I was cleaning up in the bathroom," she recalled. "I'd cleaned the
toilet and he suddenly announced, while I was on my knees, that maybe
we should get married... It was terribly romantic!"
