Injured duckling helps teach wheelchair boy to walk
By Richard Smith 11/02/2010
He was expected to spend his life in a wheelchair, but here's Finlay
Lomax taking his first steps after learning to walk by copying a
disabled duckling.
"I've told him if he works hard then one day he will be able to take
Ming-Ming for walks on a lead. That is what he is really working
towards."
Finlay can now manage to walk five yards at a time with the help of
a zimmer frame.
Becci added: "Basically when Ming-Ming laid or sat down, his leg was
right up near his head and he was unable to walk.
"I was told the duckling was to be put down.
"I was trying all over to find a vet that knew about ducks. At first I
didn't think he would make it, I felt sick.
"The most amazing thing is, in helping the duckling, Finlay has also
taken his first steps."
Finlay suffered brain damage as an infant and was diagnosed with
cerebral palsy - which affects the way the brain co-ordinates
movement in the body.
Law student Becci rescued Ming-Ming - named after a character in
TV show Wonder Pets - when he was just a day and-a-half-old.
The four-year-old suffered a stroke as a baby and developed cerebral
palsy. Doctors told his mum Becci he'd never be able to stand on
his own two feet.
But he began studying the way pet duckling Ming-Ming walked with
a splayed leg and started mimicking him. He told astonished Becci:
"I walk like the duck mummy."
She said: "I had been told Finlay might never be able to walk so it's
amazing to think he is taking steps thanks to the duckling.
"He's been having physio all his life but never really responded until
we got the duckling."
Becci, 29, took in tiny Ming-Ming after a farmer friend told her the
duckling struggled to walk because of his bad leg and was going to
be put down.
A vet gave the duck physiotherapy and fitted him with a splint. He
began to ' home as his leg strengthened. Single mum Becci, of
Plymouth, Devon, added: "As soon as Ming-Ming started physio and
began walking so did Finlay. I was brimming with pride. Finlay has
really taken to the him. He is now much stronger and it's great to
see him walking.

Daughter's tribute to dying mother is a YouTube sensation
A YouTube clip of 16-year-old Sarah Phillips' emotional tribute to
her dying mother is set to become an internet sensation after
getting thousands of hits online.
After saying an emotional farewell to her dying mother, Sarah Phillips,
16, decided to produce a personal tribute to Debbie Phillips's four-
year battle against cancer. Alone in her bedroom, Sarah read the
words of the song "Autumn", by Scottish singer Paulo Nutini, from
the internet.
Then, holding her mobile phone in her left hand and using it as a
recording device, she sang the song pitch perfect without any music –
and without a single mistake or hesitation.
Four and a half hours later, Sarah and the rest of her family were
at Mrs Phillips' bedside in the family home when she took her final
breath. She was 48.
Last week the version of the song that Sarah recorded was released
on the YouTube website just days after Mrs Phillips's funeral, an
event attended by more than 400 family and friends.
The song has been put to music and clips from family videos – taken
during the last two decades of Mrs Phillips's life – have been turned
into a short film.
In just five days, the YouTube clip has had thousands of "hits" and
it is set to become a global internet sensation.

(Abbott Laboratories)
Everything you ever wanted to know about Lake Forest's 'secret
millionaire'
Following a surprise $7 million donation left to Lake Forest College
by 1931 alumnus and "secret millionaire" Grace Groner, many are
wondering about the generous woman who lived so modestly in
one of the richest Chicago suburbs.
Groner worked as a secretary at Abbott Laboratories for 43 years--
where she made a $180 stock purchase in 1935, the Chicago
Tribune reports. She reinvested the dividends over the years, and
at the time of her death--at the age of 100--it was worth $7 million.
Groner's lawyer was one of the few people who knew about her
fortune, the Tribune reports:
She lived in an apartment for many years before a friend willed her
a tiny house in a part of town once reserved for the servants. Its
single bedroom could barely accommodate a twin bed and dresser;
its living room was undoubtedly smaller than many Lake Forest
closets.
Over the years she also made donations to people in need in the
community--sometimes anonymously--and previously gave
$180,000 to Lake Forest College for a scholarship program.
She also "traveled widely" after her retirement, and wanted those
who received her scholarship money to get real-life experience
through internships and travel abroad.
"She did not have the (material) needs that other people have,"
her attorney William Marlatt said. "She could have lived in any
house in Lake Forest but she chose not to. ... She enjoyed other
people, and every friend she had was a friend for who she was.
They weren't friends for what she had."

http://www.nownews.com/2010/03/18/91-2581530.htm
Lottery winner bus driver returns to work
"Sorry love, I'm off back on the buses!" Bus driver-turned millionaire
Kevin Halstead, 46, is off on his jollies – but has pledged to get back
behind the wheel.
Kevin, who has been driving the 125 bus between Bolton and
Preston for the past 17 years, was yesterday unveiled as the lucky
winner of £2,302,668 in Saturday's National Lottery draw.
His regular numbers – 23, 25, 28, 33, 44, and 49 – all came up as
he sat and watched the draw with his mum Joyce, 68, at her home
in Eccleston.
He and partner of 11 years Josephine Jones, 43, who has never
been abroad, will go on holiday – as soon as they both get a passport!
Stagecoach driver Kevin, from Chorley, said: "I don't want to pack
my job in.
"I asked my boss for time off, a month maybe two, but I don't want
to cut myself off from my friends and I really enjoy my job."
The Liverpool FC fan says he will buy his mum a bungalow and his
14-year-old daughter Jessica a pony.
But he won't be spending his windfall on replacing his prized 2003
Renault Laguna.
"I'm not one for a fancy Ferrari or anything like that," he said.
"I've just bought a really nice car. It's not brand new but it's got
half leather interior and it is really tidy."
It's not the first time Kevin has hit the headlines – he appeared in
the Evening Post in 1998 after taking his bus on a life-and-death
dash through Chorley when passenger Dorothy Watson, who
suffered from angina, fell ill and had to be whisked to hospital.
The then 34-year-old flicked the emergency switch on the bus,
transforming it into a makeshift ambulance complete with flashing
lights and siren!
Now his heroic efforts have been rewarded 12 years on – and
even his ex-wife may benefit.
His divorce from Helen, Jessica's mum, was finalised three months
ago – 13 years after they separated.
Had the decree absolute been delayed, the busman could have
been forced to hand over half of the jackpot to his ex. But he
hasn't ruled out the possibility of helping her out financially.
He said: "We have remained very good friends over the years. I
don't know what I will be doing with the money just yet but I want
to take care of my friends. She is a very good friend. I go round
and have cups of tea with her and her new partner.
"We have had a giggle about that this morning."
Liverpool fan Kevin celebrated his win by visiting Anfield for Monday
night's victory against Portsmouth and said he would buy a season
ticket.
Kevin, who has played the lottery twice a week for years, bought
his ticket from The One Stop in Eccleston last Friday before visiting
mum Joyce in Eccleston.
He watched his numbers come up live but initially thought he'd only
got five numbers. He explained: "When I started shouting my
mum said it was 46 that had come up, not 44. Then I realised that
44 had come up and 46 was the bonus ball."
Three of the numbers were for his birthday (25), his daughter's
birthday (23) and his partner Josie's (2. |

(Centrepoint)

Homeless girl invited to royal wedding
A young girl, who shared homeless shelters with drug addicts
while recovering from a serious stroke barely a year ago, is all set
to join the Who's Who of the world invited to attend the upcoming
royal wedding in less than two weeks.
Shozna, 20, will take her place alongside the royals, A-list
celebrities and foreign dignitaries at the first ‘people's royal
wedding,' Daily Mail reported Sunday.
Prince William and Kate Middleton have invited the former
homeless teenager to Westminster Abbey after she was rescued
from destitution by Princess Diana's homeless charity, Centrepoint.
Following his mother's footsteps by becoming patron in 2005,
Prince William, 28, spent a freezing winter's night sleeping rough,
in support of their plight, two years ago.
At a charity gala last summer, he heard Shozna narrate the galling
story of how she was made homeless after having a major heart
surgery and faced the prospect of life on the streets.
The Prince was so moved that he broke royal protocol by giving her
a hug.
He has now chosen her for a golden ticket to the April 29 ceremony.
An excited Shozna said: “I want to say to Prince William:
‘Congratulations. Thank you for inviting me and thank you for
making people feel like they are part of the world instead of being
alone.'”

(Sundance)

Wayne Klinkel, Montana Man, Reimbursed For 'Mutt-ilated' Money
HELENA, Mont. (AP)
— A Montana man who painstakingly gathered and reassembled parts of
five $100 bills eaten by his golden retriever has been reimbursed by the
U.S. Treasury for the "mutt-ilated" currency.
Wayne Klinkel of Helena received a $500 check on Monday, the Independent
Record (http://bit.ly/1540xEA) reported.
"It was great to get the check after all the crap I went through," Klinkel,
a graphic artist at the newspaper, joked.
His 12-year-old dog, Sundance, downed all but half of one of the bills in
December. Sundance, a rescue from a Wyoming animal shelter, snacked on
the cash left in the family vehicle while Klinkel and his wife ate at a restaurant,
but left a $1 bill untouched. They were on a road trip to visit their daughter in Colorado.
Klinkel carefully picked through the dog's droppings over the next few days
to recover parts of the bills and his daughter recovered more when the snow
melted in the spring.
Klinkel cleaned and carefully reassembled the bills, put them in plastic bags
and sent them to the U.S. Treasury in April with an explanation.
He got a receipt for the bills 10 days later, and didn't hear from the Treasury
until he received the check.
"I gave Sundance a pat, showed it to him and told him not to eat it," said Klinkel.
He said there wasn't any correspondence with the check, but the memo
section in the bottom left read: "MUT.CURR REFUND."

(Ian Tibbetts)

FATHER SEES TWINS FOR FIRST TIME AFTER REGAINING EYESIGHT
THROUGH LENS IN HIS TOOTH – YES, TOOTH
A British man has regained a portion of his eyesight thanks to one of his teeth.
That’s not a typo. One of Ian Tibbetts’ teeth was extracted, implanted with
a lens and then put into his eye, giving him a percentage of his sight back
and letting him see his 4-year-old twin sons for the first time.
According to the U.K. Independent, Tibbetts underwent osteo-odonto-
keratoprothsesis (OOKP) surgery, which surgeon Christopher Liu only performs
on five patients each year. Liu, a professor at Sussex Eye Hospital in Brighton,
is working to teach other surgeons about the novel procedure for patients
with irreversible corneal scarring.
Tibbetts lost his eyesight in one eye and then the other in an accident and
through subsequent infections starting in 2002.
The surgery involves removing a tooth and some bone from the patient’s
mouth, shaping it and embedding a lens through it. The tooth-lens combo
is then implanted. Here’s more from the Independent on that process:
This is then inserted in a pouch cut in the flesh under the non-operative
eye, while a flap of skin is removed from the inside of the cheek and stitched
on to the front of the eye due to receive the tooth.
Four months later, when the tooth has developed a blood supply, another
operation is carried out to remove part of the cornea, the iris and the vitreous
(the gel inside the eye), while the tooth and bone lamina is then cut out of
the pouch and stitched into the eye socket, where it is covered by the piece of
cheek skin.
“The technical success rate is close to 100 per cent. The number of people
who will see well for a very long time is two-thirds to three-quarters. If I
am a bit more pessimistic I will say half to two-thirds. But for the majority
of people it will work,” says Professor Liu.
The Daily Telegraph reported Tibbetts’ thoughts after he saw his sons for the
first time:
“I have my independence back now and I can start looking after the kids
while my wife is out at work. Before, the kids were just shapes. I couldn’t
make them out.
“I had to actually learn to tell them apart by their voices. I could tell whichever
one it was by the way they spoke and sometimes by how quickly they moved.
“The image in my mind was totally different to how they were – the features.
I gave them a big hug and a kiss.
BBC is featuring Tibbetts and the surgery in a feature called “ The Day I
Got My Sight Back” Tuesday.
