Gas tank robbers head straight to the source
Posted: May 28, 2008 03:32 PM
CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC)
It used to be all crooks needed was a rubber tube. Back in the 1970's
thieves could stick a tube into your tank and with a little work have free
gas.
New technology has made those tactics obsolete. Now, crooks are turning
to power tools. There have been reports of gas tanks getting drilled for
that precious fuel.
SUV's or trucks are more vulnerable because of their height, crooks can
easily crawl underneath.
One local mechanic says that sort of crime has the potential to end in
tragedy. "You try to drill into a metal tank, you're gonna have sparks
either from the bit or from the electric motor in the drill the gasoline itself
doesn't have to hit it just the vapors, which is more flammable than liquid
anyhow...it hits that spark that's it...you've got more, you end up with
more than fuel you may end up with a fatality," said Charles Spence of
Mccaskill's Auto Repair.
Even newer cars aren't safe from crooks these days, but right now it looks
like people in our area are o-k. Most newer cars have plastic tanks but
the threat of combustion is still there if your a dealing with a power tool.
We checked in with AAA, and it appears this type of gas theft hasn't made
it to the Carolinas.
They say the only way to avoid something like this is parking in a secure
area.
