Intel 80286 - 1982
Intel 80286 (also known as 286) is the processor that started the personal computer revolution in the 80's. The number of world's 286 personal computers reached 15 million just within six years of Intel 80286's release. Compared to 80186, 80286's execution speed on some instruction and the size of supported memory (16MB) has been imporved a lot. At the time, people predicted that there would be no need to increase the memory support for at least ten years.
Intel 80286 has 134,000 transistors, 16-bit data bandwidth, and its clock speed ranges from the initial 4 Mhz to the latest 25Mhz; its internal and external data bandwidth are both 16 bits, and its memory address size is 20 bits. Compared to 8086, Intel 80286 can address memoery up to 16MB and supports virtual memory to emulate memory space. 80286 also supports multi-treading by fast switching between the threads, so Intel 80286's performance was more than 5 times of 8086. IBM used 80286 as CPU for its newer IBM AT PC systems, which has much larger memory and hard drive support, VGA display and a big performance boost.

80286(簡稱286)就是造成個人電腦風行的一款中央處理器晶片(CPU),在發佈後的六年中,全球286的個人電腦一共出貨了一千五百萬台。它除了改善了一些指令的執行速度,同時也增加最大記憶體支援到16MB。當初預計這種記憶體支援大概在十年之內都不會需要再增加了。
80286晶片含有十三萬四千個電晶體、十六位元頻寬,工作時脈由最初的4MHz逐步提高到25MHz。其內部和外部資料頻寬皆為十六位元,記憶體定位頻寬為二十四位元。與8086相比,80286記憶體定位功能達到了16MB,並可以使用虛擬記憶體模擬大量記憶空間,因而大大擴展了80286的工作範圍,還能通過多工處理器在各執行緒間來回快速切換,以同時運算多個執行緒,其速度比8086提高了5倍甚至更多。IBM公司將80286用在技術更為先進AT機中,與IBM PC XT機相比,AT機記憶體一般可擴展到16MB,可支援更大的硬碟,支援VGA顯示系統,比PC XT機在性能上有了重大的進步。
